The Wells Retreat has been founded by healer David Wells in response to the needs of so many who feel they cannot find spirituality in their secular lives. Established religion demands that we take great leaps of faith. In a world increasingly dominated by science, faith is only too often viewed as a requirement to believe in the un-provable or the absurd. The Wells Retreat demands no leap of faith, but rather explores the inner spirituality that is within every one of us.

The Retreat is a place of enhancement of the spirituality within. A journey of personal development to assist all of us to achieve our own potentiality, creativity and inner peace. Our state of mind affects all aspects of our lives, our relationships, our success at work, our enjoyment of the gifts this world can offer, and of course our health.

"By developing our individual spiritual strength, we can successfully heal ourselves both physically and emotionally."

Organised religions demand that we accept the existence of deity of some kind or another. Whether it be Buddha, Mohammed, Christ or Krishna, in every case it is demanded that we accept the Deity as the word of God and we are expected to hear and obey. But religions are written down and perpetuated by people, so how are we to distinguish between the opinions of an ancient monk, or an Eastern guru or a 20th century ego-maniac from that of a God which is not within ourselves?

As religions grow older they change. Each change is dictated by humans who believe they have a special right to dictate to others. Religion also fragments with time, and pits Christians against Christians, Moslems against Moslems, and Hindu against Hindu. Each new faction is like a new exclusive club that you are exhorted to join to receive redemption
And who are these people who believe that they are able to interpret and devise these 'Words of God'? Perhaps if one man suffers delusions of grandeur or feels he has talked to God, he is convinces others, he then leads a cult. If the cult becomes large and powerful, it becomes accepted as a religion. If that religion sends a message that it is useful to politicians, it becomes a state religion. Whose God of is course 'On its side'. Are we to continue to allow organised religion to divide and destroy us, or is it time to celebrate the existence of the human experience? Will we continue to allow other people to dictate to us our religious beliefs and thus perpetuate and highlight our differences?

By exploring our own dilemmas and problems we can navigate the ocean of life more safely.

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one and another.

Less than ten percent of Britons regularly attend church. We face a bankruptcy of religion that permeates throughout our entire society. Anything goes, and in the pursuit of political correctness religious morals can no longer be applied.

Official religion used to be able to effectively control the behaviour of the population by threats of eternal damnation. In times past, this was a much more effective method of control than any that the most oppressive regime could muster. Equally, reward for good behaviour was not promised by the State, but was promised by the dogma of 'Jam tomorrow', or in other words, salvation when you are dead. Whether your redemption was Heaven or a better reincarnation, this was a very cheap solution for the State

Then the State could rewrite the word of God, alter aspects of faith, and change the fundamental belief systems that were once considered immutable. Only recently, the General Synod of the Church of England redefined Hell. It is officially no longer a Dante-inspired furnace as a 'Permanent state of non-existence'. I wonder why they bothered with God?

It is also amazing how a small indefinable border can make such a difference. Homosexuality in the priesthood is OK for the English church but not for the Welsh. But let us not forget the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the organization that brought the term ethnic cleansing to the world, by eliminating 200,000 Cathars in the South of France. The word of God can be declared by the Pope only when he is sat on a special chair, that looks remarkably like a Victorian commode.
